Diamond Education
An introduction to the four Cs of diamond grading and the terms used in diamond jewelry listings, so you can compare stones and settings with confidence.
Common Questions
What are the four Cs of diamonds?
Carat, color, clarity and cut describe the characteristics that determine a diamond’s appearance and value. Carat is weight, color is the absence of tint, clarity measures inclusions and cut describes how precisely the stone was shaped for light return.
What does cut quality change?
A well-proportioned cut returns more light to the viewer, producing stronger brilliance and fire. Cut quality is separate from shape, so a round brilliant and an oval can both be graded on the same scale.
What settings are available?
Common settings include prong, bezel, channel, pave and halo. The setting affects how much of the stone is visible, how securely it is held and how the ring wears over time.
How do I compare certified diamonds?
Start with carat weight, then compare color and clarity within a budget, and review the cut and setting. A grading report from an independent laboratory provides a consistent reference for each stone.
